Inspired by her father’s battle with cancer, a college student has run 13 marathons in support of St. Jude.

Kyllian Warman, 20, runs in memory of her father’s battle with cancer. She trains as a St. Jude Hero for every marathon she runs, giving her the opportunity to use her running for a greater good.

St. Jude Heroes help fund the lifesaving work done at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which benefits children all over the world. St. Jude won’t stop until no child dies from cancer, and Heroes like Kyllian are helping to make that goal a reality with every mile they run.

Kyllian joined the track and field team in high school to cope while her dad battled the final stages of colon and liver cancer. He died holding her hand when she returned home after attending her high school graduation.

“Life can cripple you,” she said. “Running got me through it.”

Her senior year of high school, Kyllian committed to running 2,012 miles in the year 2012. That included frequently running eight miles to and from school. Eventually, she asked herself: What if I ran for a purpose greater than myself and raised money for a charity?

That’s when she discovered the St. Jude Heroes program. St. Jude Heroes help fund the lifesaving working done at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. St. Jude is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about helping their child live. The budgeted daily operating cost of St. Jude is $2 million, and approximately 75 percent of the budgeted costs are covered by public contributions.

Kyllian now registers as a Hero every time she runs a marathon. By the end of 2015, she will have completed 15 marathons, and she’s already raised more than $100,000. Running has helped heal her, and as a St. Jude Hero, she’s using her running to help heal others.

Kyllian says the St. Jude Heroes program appeals to so many people because it is positive on every level. “Who doesn’t want to get excited about how good their life is and who doesn’t want to make these kids have a better life?” she says. “For me, the Heroes program has really transformed everything. Everyone should be a hero once in their life.”

You too can be a St. Jude Hero and raise funds for a lifesaving mission while you train for the Carlsbad 5000. Make your personal journey to the finish line part of something bigger.
